CARRIED BY COL. DAVID LANG, 8TH FLORIDA INFANTRY. Cal. 44. S# 53136. Col. David Lang (1838-1917) born in Camden County, GA, attended the Georgia Military Institute, graduating in 1857. He later moved to Suwannee County, Florida and worked as a surveyor till war began and he enlisted in the 1st FL as a private, April 1862 he was commissioned captain in 8th FL, wounded at Antietam & Fredericksburg. After recovering, Lang was promoted to colonel of the 8th Florida on April 30, 1863, and fought at Chancellorsville, where brigade commander Edward A. Perry was disabled. Lang then led Perry's Florida Brigade in the Gettysburg campaign. On July 2, 1863, he attacked the Union center on Cemetery Ridge but was repulsed by the II Corps; the next day, the brigade supported Pickett's Charge. Brigade about 60% of its 700-plus men. When Perry returned, Lang resumed command of the 8th Florida during the Bristoe and Mine Run campaigns of 1863. In 1864, Lang led the 8th Florida regiment at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, then took command of the Florida Brigade again when Perry was badly wounded the next day. He commanded the brigade through Appomattox. Postwar he was FL adjutant general, and member of legislature.Retained by his family is this Boyle & Gamble, Richmond, VA foot officers sword and Remington New Model Army revolver & holster that Lang carried throughout war. The Remington revolver is US military inspected and was issued and captured at unknown date, but gun was made in 1861 or early 1862 based on S#. The sword is classic Confederate officer sword, copy of US pattern 1850, 29" blade with unstopped fuller, distinct Boyle & Gamble high copper cast brass hilt with pierced floral basket, laurel leaf relief decorated pommel, tiny twisted wire wrapped leather grip, plain undecorated quillon. The revolver retains it original unmarked military flap holster.UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: affidavit from Dr. Reggie Van Driest stating family descent of Col. Lang's sword & pistol, large file of wartime letters & correspondence and copies of documents in Florida state archives, copies of photographs of Lang in Confederate uniform (original is in Virginia Historical Society), and postwar in Florida Adjutant General uniform. Copy of unpublished letters to John Bachelder of the Gettysburg Battlefield Commission & others identifying exact positions held by his brigade and individual regiments (2nd, 5th, & 8th Florida) during the Gettysburg battle and positions where soldiers were killed. 1999 letter from Jim Studnicki, Florida historian & authority asking permission to use photos of captured Remington in an upcoming book. CONDITION: good overall, revolver is complete, original & matching, cleaned, 3-line patent & address are about half discernible, mechanics are fine, crisp rifled bore. Sword is complete and original, stained & pitted blade, resharpened tip, accompanying scabbard fits well but is mix of non-Confederate leather & mounts.
