18TH BATT'L VIRGINIA HEAVY ARTILLERY. Published 9th plate ruby ambrotype of 3/4 view of Lt. Benjamin Edward Hawkins (1841-1864) in double breasted gray frock coat and matching gray vest, buttons gilded. Benjamin enlisted at Petersburg as 3rd Sergeant in Capt. G. V. Rambaut's Company of Virginia Volunteers. (The Company eventually was designated Company "C", 18th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery). Elected as 2nd Lieutenant on 20 July 1863. He was shot in the stomach on Main Street in Richmond on December 26,1864, while attempting to break up a fight. He died at General Hospital No. 9 (a/k/a the "Receiving and Wayside" or "Seabrook's" Hospital) a few days later. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: A slip of paper folded inside case identifies soldier and from Richmond estate. Correspondence from VA Historical Society in 1998 relates its publication in its upcoming "Portraits of Conflict". CONDITION: Fine overall.
