SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 38 CF. S# 62511. Bbl. 7 7/16". Model 1851 Navy single action revolver mfg. by Colt and later converted to fire .38 CF ammunition. Top flat of the octagonal bbl. is marked with Colt's single line address. Left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/ PATENT" above "U.S.". Custom conversion is reminiscent of a Richards-Mason conversion, albeit without the ejector rod assembly or loading gate. Tip of the hammer has been ground down to accommodate a spring loaded firing pin that protrudes from the rear of the conversion plate. Conversion plate is retained via 2 screws on the front face. Brass trigger guard and rear grip strap with later production 1-piece plain wood grip. Rear grip strap is fitted with an additional brass plate for a proper fit to the trigger guard. Loading lever has been "bobbed" and fitted with a contemporary screw. Bbl. wedge has been shortened on one end. Matching numbers are present on the frame and cyl. Bbl. and trigger guard (renumbered) are matching via "120874". Dovetailed German silver blade front sight. CONDITION: metal components have faded to a dark gray patina, exhibiting consistent light to mild surface oxidation and pitting overall. Dark bore exhibits scattered patches of moderate pitting, while retaining good rifling throughout. Action is occasionally out of time, with the hammer not always locking rearward when cocked. Brass trigger guard and rear grip strap have been cleaned at one time, exhibiting areas of dark patina in protected areas. Grip shows some scattered handling marks, with a chip present at the toe on the left side. (01-28191/MLW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
