REVOLVER. Cal. 38 RF. S# 6551. These type 2 revolvers were assembled as a cartridge pistol originally and also converted from finished percussion 1862 Police revolvers. Colt saw an opportunity to market these pistols as a new product that also used existing parts from pistols that were quickly becoming obsolete. This example is one of the 2,400 type 2 revolvers that were created using originally finished 1862 Police percussion guns. The conversion added the conversion ring on a new arbor that has the assembly number "588". This matches the loading gate which carries the assembly number "88". The loading lever was also removed and an ejector rod & housing was added. The 4.5" 1862 police bbl has a 1-line New York address. The 5-shot rebated non-fluted cylinder is the differentiating factor from type 1 revolvers which were found with fluted cylinders. It is roll stamped with the Colt stage coach scene and "COLTS PATENT" marking. The frame has the "PAT. JULY. 25. 1871. / PAT. JULY 2, 1872." patent marking on the left side of the frame. The trigger guard strap shoulder is stamped on the left side with "36 CAL" or "38 CAL". It is stocked with its original Colt 1-piece grips with handwritten SN "6551" in the back strap channel. Matching SN are also found on the frame, bbl, straps, & cylinder. Un-numbered wedge. CONDITION: Overall very good-fine. Bbl retains 80% of its factory blue with the exposed areas having a nice grey patina with crisp address. The ejector housing only has finish remaining in the most protected of areas. The frame has 20% thin case colors with smooth surface and crisp markings. The rimfire hammer has 60% of its original case colors. The cylinder has a very nice legible scene retaining 70% of its original thinning blue. The silver plating on the straps has entirely faded to the brass and remains under the grips. Nice grips with most of its original varnish, a series of dents on the butt and some mild rounding of the high edge. Pretty nice bore with some mild frosting. (01-29519/ZAL) ANTIQUE $2,000-3,000
