Cal. 31. S# 7099. Mfg. 1848. Approx total production of the Colt 1848 Baby Dragoon was only 15,000 mfg from 1847-1850 and was the first pocket Colt produced after the Paterson. This example has a 6" oct barrel without a loading lever and a 2-line New York City address with brackets. The 5 shot cylinder has the correct early Texas Ranger roll scene, oval cylinder stops, and "COLTS / PATENT / 7099". The frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" and is not slotted for capping. It has silver plated brass straps with square back trigger guard. A lightly scratched name was applied to the backstrap in a script font "D.G.HUGHES". The orig Colt 1-piece grips are penciled "099" in the butt channel. The bbl, cylinder, wedge, straps, arbor, and grips have all matching SN. CONDITION: Overall good. Front and back straps retain 60% of their thinning silver. Cylinder scene has faded to around 30% with most of the ranger visible and crisp patent/SN markings. Bbl has a little bit of the bluing remaining in a very small area around the wedge with the grey patinaed balance having a few spots of old mottled oxidation. Grips are hand worn with some chips in the corners, dings and edge wear. Bore has distinct rifling with some mild shallow pitting. (01-29507/ZAL) ANTIQUE $2000-3000
