SABER ATTRIBUTED TO INDIANA SOLDIER JOHN W. SHEWALTER. Cal. 32. S# 3999. Standard configuration S&W No. 2 army revolver, scarcer short 5" barrel, blue finish, varnished rosewood grips, barrel has one line address & cylinder has rolled patents, matching assembly marks, manufactured 1862. The accompanying model 1860 cavalry saber is made by Roby in 1865. 3 tags were attached to gun and sword; one stating "PVT. JOHN W. SHEWALTER / USED IN C.W." as well as a large file of copied service and pension records. There is only one soldier with this name in database, John W. Shewalter (1839-1921) served in 8th Battalion Indiana Cavalry & 39th Indiana infantry, enlisted August 1861, discharged September 1864. CONDITION: revolver is very good overall, traces of blue, crisp action, good rifled bore. Saber markings are crisp, complete leather & wire wrapped grip, steel scabbard is cleaned with wire brush, large dent, patinaed brass hilt. (01-27889, 02-25209/JS). ANTIQUE/NON-GUN. $800-1,500.
