Cal. 50. S# 7866. Standard configuration for this popular breech loading carbine, 21-5/8" octagonal to round barrel, iron mounted, originally case colored & blued. On the left side of breech is marked "ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A."; "SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23 1857"; & "MANUFACTURED BY / MASS ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS", both Mass Arms & American Machine Works made this contract, all purchased by US government, total production about 30,000. Some of the earliest serialized guns like this were issued to 1st Mass Cav, 2nd WV Cav, 11th Ill Cav, 11th Ill cav. This proved to be one of the best carbines used during the war. CONDITION: good condition overall, complete & original, all matching. Refinished, crisp markings, old blue retained on receiver, accompanying commercial sporting sling is sound and maker marked, sound but worn & weathered, no discernible inspector cartouches. Mechanics are excellent very good rifled bore. (01-29058/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,500.
