OFFICER'S OVERCOAT & CAPE. This dark blue heavy wool overcoat, sometimes referred to as a greatcoat is made of high grade dark blue wool with faded black mohair trim. The overcoat closes with toggle buttons and straps that are ornamented by 6 lobed ornaments. There is added mohair tape ornamentation throughout the overcoat including 3 rows of Austrian knots at each cuff. The lining appears to be a blue Kersey wool quilted horizontally. The various buttons throughout the coat are covered in black cloth. The cape which at first glance matches the overcoat, has two Civil War staff buttons at the front of the collar. The trim on the cape is similar to that of the coat and the color is quite similar. The lining is a faded black polished cotton. The cape has 7 attachment button holes at the collar to secure it to the overcoat however, the overcoat has 5 buttons on the collar for attachment indicating that the two pieces were not born together. CONDITION: the coat has scattered moth damage, some of which have been backed with appropriate cloth. The lining of the coat is reasonably solid with minor insect effects. The lining of the cape has severe deterioration on the right side. Several of the cloth covered buttons are loose or pinned on. (02-27183/BF). NON-GUN. $1,500-3,000.
