The Grimsley saddle was a very popular military regulation saddle during the Civil War years. The Grimsley was patented in 1840 by Thornton Grimsley; a saddler from St. Louis, MO. It proved most popular among artillery drivers and was a favorite among mounted officers of the Union Army. The Grimsley saddle was also widely utilized by Confederate cavalry. The Grimsley was known for its deep seat, high pommel and cantle with escutcheon shields on the front and back. This example is complete with brass stirrups and full length stirrup straps. Even the girth is still intact. CONDITION: as expected, the leather is a bit dry but surprisingly complete with only very minor separations and losses. (02-27180/BF). NON-GUN. $1,800-2,600.
