SXS DOUBLE RIFLE. Cal. .577. Wilkinson & Son began it's company history with famous gunmaker Henry Nock. James Wilkinson was his foreman and took over operations after his Nock's death in 1804. Henry Wilkinson would eventually join his father in the production of fine British made firearms and swords. After Henry assumed management of the company in 1824 Henry moved the company to the 27 Pall Mall address in central London. This well built example has a rugged set of 22" damascus 5-groove rifled bbls with wide 5/8" smooth flat rib that is marked "WILKINSON LONDON" and fit with a dovetailed fine beaded blade front sight and 3-leaf express rear sight. The V notch rear sight leaves are graduated for 100, 150, & 200 yds. The underside of the barrels are London proofed with "CROWN/GP" & "CROWN/V" on each tube with the latter found again on the hooked breech. The breech is accented with a spray of engraved scroll with flanking chip & dot borders and fitted with a platinum disc blowout plug along the bolster. The brass tipped ramrod is secured with 3 iron ferrules the mid carries a sling swivel stud and a key lug is mounted on the rear. The tang is decorated with a finely engraved sunburst emanating from the wide fences with a rosette center piece adorning the tang screw and sprays of foliate scroll chasing the length of the tang and trimmed with a fine border line. The lock features sliding bar hammer locks checkered and engraved with a scallop shell and batwing motif. The hammers are accented with foliate scroll panels with checkered spurs and rosette engraved screws. Lock is further decorated with 3-vignettes of foliate scrolls and chip and dot borders. Double triggers. The iron finger spur trigger guard, nose cap, & butt plate are decorated with foliate scroll panels, batwing pattern tangs, rosette screws, chip and dot borders, and volute based pineapple finials. The straight grip walnut stock is checkered with a wrap around point pattern and has a vacant silver thumb plate at the wrist, as well as, sling stud in the toe line. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Tan compartmentalized red felt lined shotgun case with added Wilkinson & Son label. Brass bullet mold. CONDITION: Overall very good. The bbl has a smooth grey patina with good ribbon pattern showing some wear. Crisp markings. Nice shiny bore with decent rifling. Stock is very good with some minor handling marks.
