British Altered Pattern 1842 Rifled Musket, #NVSN, .702 cal., 39" round barrel with four-groove rifling, browned finish, walnut stock with brass trigger guard, buttplate, and three rammer pipes. Blade front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight with two "V"-notches, graduated to 1000 yards. Barrel is attached to the stock with three iron keys. A very good condition iron rammer is mounted under the barrel. There are sling swivels mounted to the trigger guard and forend. Rifle Musket was altered into its present configuration by rifling the barrel and fitting the rear sight. Lock plate has two line engraving and is marked "1849/ENFIELD/(Lock Viewers mark)" with a "(Crown)VR" on the tail. Left side of the barrel is stamped with Crowned Proof and View marks and a later "Opposing Arrows" sold out of service stamp. A clear Board of Ordnance "(Broad Arrow)BO" mark is stamped on left side of the buttstock and "YEOMANS" with crowned inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the buttstock. "C.O.BIRCHAM" is stamped on left side stock flat behind the rear lock nail. Condition overall is very good, with the barrel showing a mottled appearance from a partial cleaning. Lockplate and hammer have toning and spots of patina. Brass parts have a darkened patina. Wood is very good with handling marks and impressions to the darkened finish. Hammer operates smoothly and holds on the half and full cock. Bore rates good with several spots of pitting, otherwise bright with well-defined rifling. Est.: $700-$950. (Antique)
