SHIP PLEIAD. This pattern of sword was popular with the British military as well as merchant vessels during the early 19th Century and ultimately became the pattern 1861 Hospital Corpsman sword and the well known Coast Guard cutlass. This earlier example measures 34" overall with a straight single edge 26 1/4" blade that shows a crowned "GR" cypher on each side of the blade; likely from the reign of King George IV. Brass hilt with a single branch knuckle bow and plain crossguard with a drop quillon. The grip is ribbed cast iron with a black painted finish. Brass mounted black enameled wooden scabbard marked on the throat "DEAKIN PATENT". The British steam yacht Pleiad sailed on a voyage of exploration up the river Niger and its tributary, the Benue in 1854. The expedition was lead by Royal Navy surgeon William Balfour Baikie who was credited with navigating over 250 miles of uncharted African inland waterways without a single European casualty from malaria. The expedition was tasked with charting rivers, establishing peaceful contact with local indigenous people and to inquire about the slave trade. There are pistols and muskets known to be engraved with the name of the ship Pleiad in the same font and style that is found on the knuckle bow of this example. CONDITION: overall very good. The blade has a lightly mottled light gray patina. Royal cyphers are mostly visible but not complete due to light stamps. The hilt has a pleasing mustard patina and the engraving is very fine. Grip is sound. The scabbard is very good with a matching patina to the brass on the sword. The body retains most of its lacquer with minor losses. A nice historic British sword. (02-27226/ZAL/BF). $900-1,400.
