Antique Japanese Mounted Tanto, 12-1/8" (30.7cm) long katakiriba shaped blade, being flat on one side and having a large ridge on the other side. No defined yokote line, so a Shobu-zukuri shape on the side with the ridge. Faint and weak straight temper line hamon is mostly visible near the bottom few inches of the blade on one side. The unsigned tang has two mounting holes and shows heavy age and pitting with a dark patina. Gold plated copper habaki has a decorative edge. The tsuba guard is iron with pierced openings on right and left sides, and openings at the top and bottom filled with textured shakudo plugs. Gold plated brass seppa spacers have a bamboo design around the edges. The handle is wood covered in stingray skin and crudely wrapped with a modern thin leather thong. The menuki are large copper dragons with applied gold overlay showing heavy wear. The fuchi/kashira handle fittings are large katana sized, heavy iron, decorated with raised designs of a dragon in the waves, and have applied gold details. The saya scabbard has a simulated wood bark design with a copper bottom fitting, an iron mid-scabbard decoration of a dragon & jewel, a bright copper kurikata decorated with pine needles and a scythe, and horn fittings at the mouth and edge of the kozuka pocket. There is an unusual kozuka present, the handle being iron with a shakudo backplate, decorated in raised designs of Plover birds above waves. The kozuka is signed on the back "Masatoshi" with a kao. The kozuka blade may be modern. Condition is fair, the blade showing some small folding flaws, small blisters, minor crack along the top ridge and on the shinogi line, a couple of small cracks near the top of the tang that are only on one side, and a small bend near the top of the blade. The temper line is faint and mostly obscured by fine scratch marks on both sides of the blade. The tsuba shows rust and pitting commensurate with its age. The iron handle fittings show a nice dark patina with normal age and light wear. The wrapping on the handle is modern and poorly done. The menuki show heavy wear to the gold finish and soiling. The scabbard, and the fittings on it, have been covered with a recent thick layer of varnish. The kozuka handle shows some rust and heavy patina to the iron side, and light wear from use to the patina on the shakudo back plate. Overall, an interesting piece that might benefit from some restoration. Est.: $400-$700.
