Antique Colt 1851 Navy 3rd Model Percussion Revolver, #41274, .36 cal., 7.5" octagon barrel, blue and color case hardened finish, with brass straps and small trigger guard, smooth walnut one-piece grip, brass pin front sight, and small V-notch located on the hammer. Cylinder with naval battle scene. All visible serial numbers are matching, except for an unnumbered wedge. There are remnants of an inspector's cartouche at the bottom of the left grip panel. Mfgd 1855. Revolver is in good overall condition with the metal parts having gone to a mottled gray patina. Barrel has a few light impressions and areas of fine pinprick pitting, sharp edges, with knackering around the replaced front sight. Cylinder displays approx. 25%-30% of a lightly rolled scene with partially visible Ormsby signature and shows light pin prick pitting and erosion caused by firing. Safety tabs are flattened with all nipples intact. Brass straps and trigger guard have been cleaned, leaving a bright appearance. Frame shows silvered color case hardened finish. Grips are in very good condition with what appears to be "ALEXANDER" carved into the right panel; grip channel has a partially legible serial number ending "74". Action functions well, holding at half and full-cock. Bore is fair with moderate erosion; rifling is clear. The lot includes a family letter that describes how the gun descended thru the Conley/Ades family. Purportedly having served in the Civil War and later been captured by the Whaler Captain grandfather, turned Sheriff after a gunfight. An interesting piece worthy of additional research. Est: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
