MILITARY TEST LUGER WITH CORRECT MAGAZINE. Cal. 7.65mm Luger. S#6968. The US Test Lugers were largely produced in a 1,000 unit block serialed from 6100-7100. All with a 4 3/4" barrel, the American Eagle crest, safety lever with small checkered head, thin grip safety and uniformly checkered walnut grips. In contrast to the concurrently produced commercial Lugers, the US Test pistols were never stamped "GERMANY" and the last two digits of the serial number were stamped on the right side of the takedown lever axle. While this example shares those features, a number of parts are mismatched, likely when the military checked parts interchangeability amongst various pistols. The full serial number "6968" is marked on the forward frame and repeated under the barrel with the last two digits on the barrel extension lug, the right side of the takedown lever, on the holdopen, and on the grip safety. The entire toggle train is matched to the number "84", the trigger is numbered "70", the sideplate is numbered "97", the left grip "52", and the right grip numbered "67". MAGS: x1 8-rd. tinned mag. with an unmarked walnut plug. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: A packet of information pertaining to this Luger addressed to John Eckert from Gregory Nierengarten. The packet includes a notarized letter from Nierengarten that indicate how his grandfather, John C. Souder (whom acquired this Luger), came into possession of it, as well as scans of Souder's obituary and U.S. military identification card. This interesting letter can be read via the online catalog. This example is also accompanied by a copy of "1900 Luger U.S. Test Trials" by Michael Reese II. CONDITION: near excellent with approximately 97% of its bright original rust blue with sharp edge wear in the expected places for a lightly holstered and tested pistol. Fading on the hump of the sideplate and fine freckled speckling on the front and back strap. Comparable condition to strawed parts that show no suggestion of enhancement. The same applies to the fire blued front sight, rear toggle pin, and the grip screws. Grips have oil darkening with slight checkered blunting and occasional impressions, the impressions most noticeable on the left panel. Excellent magazine with crisp plug. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Correct manual mechanics. A beautiful-looking, original finish 1900 DWM American Eagle U.S. Military Test Luger whose mismatched parts are more likely an attestation to military testing than a reflection of damaged part replacement. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of John Eckert. (26-2218/LMA). CURIO. $3,500-6,500.
