LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44-40. S#. 71164. Mfg. 1881. This special order rifle is fitted with a 26" octagon bbl. with dovetailed Rocky Mountain German silver front sight, buckhorn elevator adjustable rear sight, and marked with the "WINCHESTER-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER.16. 1860." bbl. address. The straight grip case colored frame has a screw mounted (2nd Model) dust cover rail with serrated edge dust cover. The lower tang is marked "X" & assembly number "1409". It is fitted with a single X grade G style checkered figured walnut stock set with smooth crescent steel trapdoor buttplate. The upper channel of the stock is stamped "1409" and the same assembly number is found on the inside toe of the buttplate. Plain trigger. CONDITION: Overall good-very good. The bbl retains 30% of its original bluing with the balance turned to an even brown patina. The mag tube is mostly void of finish with the exception of the more protected areas. The frame has traces of case coloring with a larger vibrant patch in the protected area near the trigger. Stock set shows some hand wear and scattered light handling marks. The forearm is sound with 7 kill notches in the left side and a heavy dent in the right and some wear to the checkering. The butt has a good look with some scattered dings less wear to the checkering and other than an old tight crack at the upper tang is sound. The bore has some frosting and light rifling wear.
