TO TEXAS LAWMAN R.D. "BOSS" THORP. Cal. 44-40. S# 87074. Mfg. 1883. This revolver is documented as once belonging to R.D. "BOSS" Thorp. Boss was the Chief of Police for Austin, TX with a 30 year career spanning from 1928-58. Prior to serving with the police force he played baseball for a Tampico, Mexico team. Boss was named acting Chief of Police in Austin in Oct. of 1928 after the then Chief was killed in the line of duty. It was made permanent the following month. In 1934 as president of the Texas Police Association, Boss worked for legislation that would go on to create the Department of Public Safety. This revolver was sold to Collector Firearms in Houston, TX and is accompanied by a copy of a notarized affidavit from the purchaser in 2002 stating it was purchased from the grandson of Boss. It is fitted with a 4.75" bbl with only a 44 under the bbl. The frame has a 3-line patent roll stamp. It has an original Colt 1-piece grip with no legible numbers in the channel and custom applied deep checkering. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt Factory Record copy listing the revolver shipping to Harley & Graham, New York, NY in March 1883. It was not listed with a barrel length indicating it was possibly a 7.5" when it left the factory. Copy of the notarized affidavit from Collectors Firearms, as well as, copies of a newspaper article and photos of Boss. CONDITION: overall fair. All metal surfaces have turned to an even dark patina. The cylinder pin and trigger have been replaced. The mainspring has an added reinforcing leaf that gives the revolver a hair trigger. The grips are heavily hand work on the right with some small chips in the corner. (01-28982/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
