Cal. 1 3/4" bore. NSN. Bbl. 22" including socket. This visually appealing gun would have been similar to the type used on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Most muzzle-loading artillery, although referred to as "brass" were actually an alloy known as "Gunmetal" which is not as hard and brittle as true brass. This piece appears to be gunmetal. Barrel is marked near the vent with three fine indecipherable marks. The integral socket at the rear of the breech is designed to accept a wooden tiller, by which the piece is controlled. The breech is approximately 4 1/8" in diameter. Muzzle is approximately 3". Center trunnions. Gun is equipped with an iron yoke allowing tranverse and elevation. The yoke fits into a modern decorative iron base whose purpose is to facilitate display. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: included is a newsletter dated November 2020 from the Washington chapter of the Lewis & Clark Foundation. This gun is pictured on the cover. Described briefly on page six. CONDITION: the vent has been drilled. The outside has a pleasing dark patina with numerous spots of verdigris. Bore has a dark rough cast appearance. Steel yoke. Appears hand-forged and has turned overall patina. Base has a flaking dark brown finish. (01-29216/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
