RIFLE. Cal. 44-40. S# 60266. Mfg. 1880. It is fitted with early 24" round bbl with dovetailed German silver sporting front sight & semi-buckhorn rear sporting sight. The bbl address is the early type with 2-line address... "WINCHESTERS-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT / KINGS-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16, 1860.". Dust cover is of the serrated edge variety with screw fastened central cover guide. Upper tang is marked with early style "MODEL. 1873. Stock is a straight grip walnut set with trapdoor smooth crescent steel buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Letter indicating: Type: Carbine / Received from warehouse on Aug 20, 1880 / To Round barrel, Plain trigger / Shipped from warehouse on November 16, 1880, Order number 22495". The likely-hood is that the carbine type is a records error. CONDITION: Overall good. The barrel is nearly void of finish with some traces remaining in the most protected of areas and the balance having turned to a smooth even brown patina. The frame has 10% of the original bluing remaining tin the protected areas with the balance having a matching even brown patina. The loading gate retains 30% of its thinning original fire blue. Butt plate has a smooth brown patina en suite with the balance of the metal surfaces. The forearm is sound with hand wear and a few tiny edge chips and minor dings. The butt is good with hand wear, scattered handling marks, and a couple of small tight cracks at the upper tang and buttplate. Nice bright shiny bore with light rifling wear.
