PLAINS RIFLE. Cal. 45. The Henry family were generational gunsmiths whose lineage extends as far back as the revolutionary war with William Henry I fabricating arms for the Committee of Safety of Pennsylvania. William Henry II would later construct the Boulton Gun Works in 1812 and then expand the family business further by sending his sons to Philadelphia to set up show rooms and assembly facilities. The shop produced a large number of muskets and pistols for foreign contracts in South America. One of the sons, John Joseph Henry, would later have his James Henry assume control of the family business in 1836 after his passing. When James' son came of age the two entered into business together and established "J. Henry & Son" in 1859. The company made over 100,000 firearms from the family firm in Boulton including this example. It is fitted with a rifled 34" heavy octagon barrel with a dovetailed silver blade front sight, dove tailed V notch rear sight, & stamped "J HENRY / & SON" on the top flat. The bbl is mounted in a chambered percussion breech and held to the stock by a single key with silver escutcheon. The lock is also marked "J HENRY / & SON" and carries a simple flat sided cock. The stock is a simple straight grained walnut with brass nose cap, iron hooked buttplate, iron trigger guard with finger spur, & an eagle themed silver patchbox with iron lid numbered "23" on the underside. The stock is marked "US" behind the trigger guard. The toeline has a simple iron plate that terminates with a pointed bulbous finial. Double set triggers. CONDITION: Overall very good. The metal surfaces have an even brown patina. The tang and buttplate have been lightly cleaned. The stock has very fine a tight hairline extending from the nosecap, but is otherwise sound and very nice. The bore has good deep sharp rifling. (01-28823/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
