BARREL PERCUSSION PLAINS RIFLE RETAILED BY CHS. CURRY SAN FRANCISCO, CA.. Cal. 58. Andrew Wurfflein arrived to the United States in 1832 after immigrating from Germany. He started his shop at 208 North Second St in Philadelphia in 1851 where he manufactured arms through the remainder of his career. He made this are between then & probably around the early 1860's. It was made specifically for Chs. Curry of San Francisco and is marked as such on the top flat of the bbl. The bbl is a 32" heavy rifled octagon with a dovetailed silver front sight and a dovetailed tiny V notch rear sight. There is a plugged dovetail 3" from the existing rear sight. The maker marked the bbl "A. WURFFLEIN / PHILA", "MADE FOR", "CHS CURRY / SAN FRANCISCO". The bbl terminates with a platinum double banded chambered bolster with chip border engraving and lugged to a long wrist tang. The simple flat hammer is attached to an unadorned back action lock. It is stocked with a simple straight grain walnut stock with double bbl keys with silver escutcheons, iron crescent buttplate, 5 1/4" iron toe line plate, circular silver patchbox pointed tipped finial, & pewter nose cap. Double set triggers are fitted under the iron double spur trigger guard. The plain hickory ramrod is fastened with two iron ferrules and a full length ramrod channel under the bbl. CONDITION: Overall good. The metal has an even dark brown patina with some spots of oxidation The stock is very good with light wear and scattered handling marks. One of the keys has a broken head. Bore has nice deep rifling with some pitting. (01-28825/ZAL) ANTIQUE $2000-3000
