TARGET RIFLE. Cal. 44. S# NSN. Bbl. 32" octagon of 1.19" at breech to 1.15" at muzzle with front 5/16" decoratively turned round to 1.1" diameter. Mfg. 1849-1874 in Sacramento, California by Adolphus Koppikus (b. 1809, d. 1882) who operated in multiple locations, but mostly in California. Renowned for superior workmanship of target rifles predominately of 1/2 stock design. Top rear of barrel and lock have his name and Sacramento markings. Ornate trigger guard assembly has double set triggers with wire style release trigger of minimal pull plus just in front of the guard, its tang has a drilled and tapped hole for a palm rest. Iron buttplate is a cross between a crescent and Schutzen style. Rear sight is a lollipop target sight affixed to rear tang; slot blank in place of rear barrel sight. Dovetailed globe front sight has circle on post aperture. Metal finish appears to be a vintage rust blue. Hardwood ramrod with brass ends plus 2 steel thimbles on barrel. Sculptured forend tip, raised shadow lined cheekpiece and wedge barrel retention. CONDITION: rear of top tang is proud of stock that has a nicely repaired break in grip area. Overall appearance is fine with metal surfaces taking on a patina tone. Stock set has numerous light handling marks. Bore is bright and shiny with a near excellent appearance. (01-28771/NW). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
