P&EW BLAKE. The first contract for the pattern 1822 (improved 1816) was issued to Eli Whitney prior to his death in 1825. When Whitney Sr. fell ill his nephews Philos & Eli Whitney Blake ran the firm. After his passing the Nephews completed the contract until 1834 when a board of trustees took control until Whitney Jr. came of age to run the company. Approx 15,000 of these were produced with the nephews names on the lock from 1826-30. This example was mfg in that final year with an 1830 date found on both the bbl and lock. The lock is marked with the "US/ P. & E.W. BLAKE." between the cock and pan. "NEW HAVEN / 1830" is found behind the hammer. The stock has two partially visible oval cartouches by the side plate and a " DA" carved in the left side of the butt. It terminates with a "US" marked buttplate. CONDITION: Overall good. The bbl has a mostly even brown patina with pitting obscuring the bbl proof area and around the pan. The lock has nice crisp markings. Stock is good with hand wear, scattered dings and a crack at the lock. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. (01-29590/ZAL) ANTIQUE $1200-1800.
